Chapter 4: Algebra Puzzle

3 x 3 Grid

My solution (Method 1):
  • 3 ladybugs = 33
  • Therefore, 1 ladybug represents 11

  • 1 ladybug + ice-creams = 49
  • Since 1 ladybug represents 11,
  • 11 + 2 ice-creams = 49
  • 2 ice-creams represent 38
  • Therefore, 1 Car represents 19

  • 1 ladybug + 2 pear = 39
  • Since 1 ladybug represents 11
  • 11 + 2 pears = 39
  • 2 pears = 28
  • Therefore, 1 Pear represents 14

  • My solution (Method 2):
  • Let L represents ladybug
  • Let i represents ice - cream
  • Let p represents pear

  • 3  L = 33
  • L = 33/3
  • Therefore, L = 11

  • Since 1L + 2 i = 49
  • 2 i = 49 - 11
  • 2i = 38
  • Therefore, i = 19

  • Since 2 i + 1 p = 52
  • 2 i = 38
  • 1 p = 52 - 88
  • Therefore, p 14

3 x 4 Grid

My solution:
  • Let F represent Flowers
  • Let D represent Drumbs
  • Let P represent Pens

  • 2D + F = 23
  • 2F + D = 16
  • D - F = (2D + F) - (2F +D)
                    = 7
  • 3F = (16 - 7) / 3
               = 9
  • Therefore, F = 3

  • 2D + F = 23
  • 2D = 23 - 3
                = 20
  • Therefore, D = 10

  • 2P + F = 35
  • 2P = 35 - 3
               = 32
  • Therefore, P = 16
